Music is very important to the life of Collingwood School. All pupils are taught music as part of their weekly timetable and they are also encouraged to learn an individual instrument from one of our professional peripatetic teachers. Instruments currently taught at the school include piano, violin, cello, trumpet, flute, oboe, recorder, drums and guitar. We also offer individual singing lessons.
There is a range of musical activities organised in the department including choirs and instrumental ensembles. Pupils participate in these activities from an early age, helping to build up ensemble playing skills.
Drama is of special interest to several members of staff at Collingwood, and everyone is aware of its benefits in promoting self-esteem, self-discipline and self-confidence. The music department works closely with the drama department and has put on many highly successful shows such as ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘Oliver!’ and ‘Grease’. More recent productions include the musicals ‘Olivia’, ‘What a Knight’ and ‘Porridge’.
