“Staff provide children in the Early Years Foundation Stage with an imaginative curriculum using a multi-sensory approach and cross-curricular planning engaging their interests and stimulating their imagination.” I.S.A. 2014.
At Collingwood we offer an exciting and stimulating Early Years curriculum following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which covers the following three prime areas of learning:
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Physical development
- Communication and language
And the four specific areas of learning:
- Mathematical development
- Understanding of the world
- Expressive arts and design

At Collingwood we believe that learning through play is very important for developing confidence, social and academic skills. Therefore each Early Years class has a role play area which is changed regularly and their own outdoor learning area as well as access to the main playground.
Our curriculum covers a wide range of subjects within the areas of learning including cooking, ICT, French, PE. Music and drama. Wherever possible we incorporate into our topic work visitors to school and trips outside school to enrich the children’s learning.
Reading is a very important part of the curriculum which begins as soon as a child joins us. In Nursery and Kindergarten the children enjoy a variety of pre-reading activities which are planned to develop the early literacy and language skills. In Reception individual reading takes place daily. As soon as a child has a good understanding of phonic sounds and can read a few words independently a reading book is introduced. We also have daily phonics sessions using the Jolly Phonics scheme and each class has an inviting book corner which helps to promote a love of reading.
