School curriculum

  • Our school curriculum

The Prep School extends and builds upon the first-class foundations laid during the children’s time in Pre-Prep. We continue to administer a firm, but fair and caring discipline alongside a challenging and varied curriculum. Every child is able to develop their full potential in a secure and friendly atmosphere.

Throughout the Prep School, Collingwood continues to focus on your child’s core skills of English, Mathematics and Science, preparing them for life beyond Collingwood. We also include timetabled weekly lessons of Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning and two Modern Foreign Languages, namely French and Spanish. A wide range of extra-curricular activities provides further opportunities for pupils to demonstrate and enhance personal skills.

From Year 3, pupils benefit from being taught by specialist teachers in their fields and in different classrooms which further contributes towards their readiness for the next stage in their education. A prime example of this are the Design Technology lessons in which pupils have the opportunity to hone their planning and engineering skills.

  • Design and technology

  • There are not many schools where the boys and girls can learn skills of engineering and design technology from the age of seven.  These same children are also learning how to use a variety of tools including learning how to operate a scroll saw. As part of our programme to push the creative and technical talents of all our pupils, along with our Computing and Art curriculum, our pupils are challenged to develop their expertise in areas beyond the standard primary school curriculum and they always rise to the task.

Along with a thriving after school club offered to all children in Years 3 to 6, Design and Technology is a very popular subject and an integral part of the Collingwood experience.

  • Year 5 pupils currently take part in a three-day residential trip to High Ashurst. In the following year, Year 6 children enjoy a week long activity holiday at PGL Hindhead.

From Year 4 onwards, we have enrichment clubs in both Maths and English to provide extra support and guidance for common entrance examinations. Additionally Year 6 children are expected to take on additional responsibilities such as House Captain or Prefect as further preparation for the next stage of their education.

Throughout the whole of their time at the school, each pupil is treated as an individual and is encouraged to involve himself or herself in as broad a range of activities as possible to ensure that they fulfil their maximum potential through maximum opportunity.
